Everything you need to know about RPL, evidence, timeframes and how qualifications relate to state trade licensing.
RPL is a formal assessment pathway within Australia's vocational education system. It lets an assessor evaluate your existing skills and experience against the units that make up a nationally recognised (AQF) qualification, so you can be assessed as competent without repeating study you have effectively already learned on the job.
Yes. RPL is a legitimate, government-regulated assessment pathway. Your qualification must be issued by an ASQA-registered RTO, and you must still separately meet the requirements of your relevant state or territory licensing authority.
No. RPL still requires a genuine competency assessment against sufficient, authentic and current evidence. An assessor — not FMC — determines whether your evidence meets the qualification's requirements.
Evidence can include job-site photos, employer or client references, invoices, contracts, overseas qualifications, work samples, rosters, and a competency conversation with an assessor. What's required varies by qualification and industry.
An assessor considers the overall evidence available rather than relying on one document type. Photos, references and other supporting materials can still form a strong evidence portfolio.
Yes, overseas experience can be considered alongside Australian experience, though your state regulator may set its own requirements for how it counts toward a local trade licence.
An AQF qualification (like a Certificate III or IV) confirms your nationally recognised skills. A trade licence is granted separately by your state or territory regulator, which sets its own experience, insurance and financial criteria. A qualification may support a licence application, but does not automatically guarantee one.
It depends on your state — for example NSW Fair Trading, the QBCC in Queensland, the VBA in Victoria, Building and Energy in WA, or Consumer and Business Services in SA. See our state-by-state page for details.
No. FMC provides RPL pathway guidance and assessment support. Qualifications are issued only by FMC's partner RTOs following a successful competency assessment.
Timeframes vary based on your evidence, the specific qualification and RTO capacity. An FMC adviser can give you a clearer, personalised estimate after your free eligibility check.
